The Charm of Interests

In English, there are two words, "like" and "love," which represent different degrees of affection. If the degree is deeper than "love," then one must use "passion" to describe it. To excel in something, one probably needs to have an interest in it. Academician Xu Zhihong once said, "No matter what work you do, once you have an interest, you will have the perseverance to persist and can focus on one thing for a long time." In my eyes, passion is "pain and pleasure" for something. When you love something, no matter how much time you spend on it, you are willing to do so.

Our English teacher once said, "To do well in the college entrance examination English is simple, the path is paved, but to learn English well, you need to have an interest in English." Interest may flash like a spark in a moment, just like a couple may fall in love at a certain moment through eye contact when they meet again, a person with interest and the thing they are fascinated by also fall into the river and cannot extricate themselves.

Russell described philosophy in his book "A History of Western Philosophy" as follows: "There are many gaps between specific sciences. When we accidentally fall from specific sciences into these gaps, we will be trapped in endless thinking, and philosophy is born." Democracy, fairness, freedom, justice, good and evil, the more abstract the nouns, the more attractive they are to us. (From "The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind") The process of thinking about these concepts is "pain and pleasure."

Just as talent is innate, some people are naturally sensitive to language, some are naturally interested in philosophy, and some are fascinated by a life immersed in scientific research. The brains on our shoulders are all different, and discovering what we truly like, finding kindred spirits, is what we must do in our lifetime.
